224 Exam Chair Troubleshooting Chart

ClosedChair has no power
Symptom Cause Check Action
No functions will operate. Supply voltage. Check power cord connections. Secure power cord connections at wall outlet and/or chair base.
Check facility circuit breaker. Reset facility circuit breaker.
Check facility supply voltage. Contact electrician to modify voltage if necessary.
Primary fuse(s) blown. Test fuses at chair base. Replace blown fuse.
Loose or faulty wire connections. Check wire connections between power inlet and Motor Control PC board. Secure or replace loose wire connections.
Check wire connections between power inlet and isolation transformer. Secure or replace loose wire connections.
Step Down transformer (224-011). Check Step Down transformer output voltage (115 VAC). Refer to: 224-011 Fuses and Connections Replace faulty Step Down transformer.
ClosedChair Receptacle(s) malfunctioning
Symptom Cause Check Action
No power at chair receptacle(s). All other functions work. Receptacle circuit breaker(s). Check if receptacle circuit breaker(s) tripped. Reset receptacle circuit breaker(s). Refer to: User Guide (-001 thru -003 or -011)
Receptacle circuit breaker faulty. Replace circuit breaker.
Primary fuse(s) blown. Test fuses at chair base. Refer to: Receptacle Fuses and Connections Replace blown fuse.
Loose or faulty wire connections. Check wire connections. Refer to: Receptacle Fuses and Connections Secure or replace loose wire connections.
IEC inlet malfunctioning. Check voltage out of IEC inlet. Refer to: Receptacle Fuses and Connections Replace IEC Inlet.
Isolation transformer. Check isolation transformer output voltage. Refer to: Receptacle Fuses and Connections Replace faulty isolation transformer.
ClosedDrawer Heater malfunctioning
Symptom Cause Check Action
Drawer heater does not warm up, Heater switch does not illuminate. Drawer heater switch. Test drawer heater switch. Refer to: Drawer Heater Switch Replace faulty switch.
Primary fuse(s) blown. Test fuses at chair base. Refer to: Drawer Heater Fuses and Connections Replace blown fuse.
Loose or faulty wire connections. Check wire connections. Refer to: Drawer Heater Fuses and Connections Secure or replace loose wire connections.
Isolation transformer. Check isolation transformer output voltage. Refer to: Isolation Transformer Replace faulty isolation transformer.
Drawer heater does not warm up heater switch OK (illuminates). Loose or faulty wire connections. Check wire connections. Refer to: Drawer Heater Fuses and Connections Secure or replace wire connections.
Drawer heater plate. Test drawer heater plate. Refer to: Drawer Heater Plate Replace drawer heater plate.
Drawer heater OK. Heater switch does not illuminate. Drawer heater switch. Replace drawer heater switch. Replace faulty switch.
ClosedBase function not operating properly
Symptom Cause Check Action
Chair stops and beeps. Patient weight exceeded 500 lbs. Check if patient weight exceeded the 500 lb. weight limit. Inform staff that maximum patient weight is 500 lbs.
Active Sensing Technology™ activated. Check if chair came in contact with another object. Remove object from beneath drawer.
Active Sensing Technology™ switch(es). On Motor Control PC board J1 connection jump white wires for AST switches. Refer to: Base Function Fuses and Connections Replace defective switch(es). Refer to: Active Sensing Technology™ Switches
Loose or faulty Active Sensing Technology™ switch wire connections. Check wires connections between Motor Control PC board and AST switches. Refer to: Base Function Fuses and Connections Secure or replace loose wire connections. Refer to: Active Sensing Technology™ Switches
No Base up or Base down. Foot control malfunctioning. If possible, use known working Foot control from another like chair. If known working control operates chair. Replace faulty Foot control.
Perform Foot control cord test. Refer to: Foot Control Cord Test Replace faulty Foot control cord.
Loose or faulty Foot control inlet harness connection. Check inlet harness connections at Motor Control PC board and chair base. Refer to: Base Function Fuses and Connections Secure or replace Foot control inlet harness connections.
Motor Control PC board fuse(s) blown. Test F1 and F2 fuses. Refer to: Base Function Fuses and Connections Replace blown fuse(s).
Base up/down limit switch(es). On Motor Control PC board J1 connection jump black/black and white/white wires for Base limit switches. Refer to: Base Function Fuses and Connections Replace defective limit switch(es). Refer to: Base Function Components
Loose or faulty Base up/down limit switch wire connections. Check wires connections between Motor Control PC board and limit switches. Refer to: Base Function Fuses and Connections Secure or replace loose wire connections.
Overtravel limit switch. On Motor Control PC board J3 connection jump orange wires for overtravel limit switch. Refer to: Base Function Fuses and Connections Replace defective limit switch. Refer to: Base Function Components
Loose or faulty overtravel limit switch wire connections. Check wires connections between Motor Control PC board and limit switch. Refer to: Base Function Fuses and Connections Secure or replace loose wire connections.
Motor Control PC board. Check output voltage at J2 on Motor Control PC board. Refer to: Base Actuator Test Replace defective Motor Control PC board.
Base actuator motor. Perform Base actuator motor resistance test. Refer to: Base Actuator Motor Resistance Test Replace defective motor.
Base actuator. Check output voltage at J2 on Motor Control PC board. Refer to: Base Actuator Test Replace defective Base actuator.
No Base up or Base down, motor is running. Base actuator motor coupler. Inspect motor coupler for damage. Refer to: Base Function Components Replace defective motor coupler.
No Base up, Base down OK. Foot control malfunctioning. If possible, use known working Foot control from another like chair. If known working control operates chair. Replace faulty Foot control.
Perform Foot control cord test. Refer to: Foot Control Cord Test Replace faulty Foot control cord.
Loose or faulty Foot control inlet harness connection. Check inlet harness connections at Motor Control PC board and chair base. Refer to: Base Function Fuses and Connections Secure or replace Foot control inlet harness connections.

Symptom Cause Check Action
Back function drifting/spongy. Back cylinder. Check if Back cylinder is screwed in too far into the Back actuator cap. Refer to: Back Cylinder Adjustment Adjust Back cylinder.
Release handles. Check release handles and cam for movement. Adjust or replace handles and/or cam.
Back cylinder. Check Back cylinder: Refer to: Back Cylinder Adjustment Replace Back cylinder.
Back up and/or down, no movement or difficult to move. Back cylinder. Check if Back cylinder is screwed in too far into the Back actuator cap. Refer to: Back Cylinder Adjustment Adjust Back cylinder.
Release handles. Check release handles and cam for movement. Adjust or replace handles and/or cam.
Back cylinder. Check Back cylinder: Refer to: Back Cylinder Adjustment Replace Back cylinder.
Actuator Cap/Plunger Check if actuator cap and/or plunger is compromised. Replace actuator cap and/or plunger.
